Curriculum Vitae

I was born on April 26th 1969 in Yerseke, the Netherlands. From an early age on I was interested in chemistry. Therefore after finishing high school, I completed successfully a study analytical chemistry at the HZ University for Applied Sciences.

After graduation I started my career at the Netherlands Institute for Ecology in the department of Marine Microbiology. From that moment on an even more challenging and interesting field of research revealed to me: the link between biology and ecology on the one hand and chemistry on the other hand.

My first research involved the speciation of trace metals in relation to algae using techniques as polarograpy and chromatography. In the years following I extended my work on planktonic and bentic diatoms, mainly focused on the influence of oxidative stress.

In 1995 I got the opportunity to study the carbon balance of salt marshes by using stable isotopes as a tracer. This was my first introduction to the powerful world of stable isotopes.

Shortly after that another challenge was offered to me: I got involved in a project to study the impact of UV-B radiation on the photosynthesis and biochemistry of terrestrial vegetation in the Antarctic. This was an excellent opportunity to combine two of my passions: science and traveling. Four summer seasons (1996-2001) I was stationed on Rothera base (67° 34’ S, 68 ° 08’ W) on the Antarctic Peninsula. Rothera is the principal British Antarctic Survey logistics centre for support of Antarctic field science with whom this project was joined. During four to five months a year I could spend my time solving some of the unsolved questions of the Antarctic mysteries. To compare the outcome of the results of the Antarctic region a proposal was granted to work in the Arctic region for one summer at a research base at Ny-Ålesund. Ny-Ålesund is situated at 78° 55´ N, 11° 56´ E on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago.

After the Antarctic project was finished I joined in 2005 the NWO-VIDI project ‘Linking microbial community structure and biogeochemical functioning in coastal marine sediments’ Methods applied were based on stable isotope (13C) labelling and biomarker analysis as lipids. A new available technique was introduced: high-performance liquid chromatography isotope ratio mass spectrometry (LC/IRMS). Being one of the first users in the world an unexplored area was waiting to be discovered. We developed a method to analyse 13C carbohydrates using this technique.

Recently I started to work on my PhD to expand the possibilities of the new LC/IRMS technique and to apply it in the marine microbial research to get a better understanding of the ecology of micro organisms and the role that micro organisms play in biogeochemical cycles.
