Thijs de Boer (1946). Graduated as chemical technician at the Laboratory School in Groningen in 1967. In 1966 he started at the "Coöperatieve Condensfabriek Friesland" in Leeuwarden working on the development of baby food, concentrating on the uptake of fatty acids and amino acids. From 1970 until 1991 he worked at the Limnological Institute in Oosterzee. Behind all kind of chemical analyses in surface waters he assisted in the study on the role of humic substances in the aquatic environment. In 1991, he moved to the NIOO Centre for Limnology in Nieuwersluis where he initially continued his work on humic substances. Especially the role and efffects of UV-b on the degradation of the humic substances were studied. In 1993 he joined the Department of Plant-Animal Interactions. Within this group he is working on the population dynamics, phenotypic plasticity and the controlling processes of submerged ‘clonal’ water plants in shallow water ecosystems.
