Curriculum Vitae
Paul Klaassen (1978) graduated as a BSc. in Aquatic Ecotechnology at the Hogeschool Zeeland in 2002. During this study he did an internship for the island government of Bonaire (Dutch Antilles) on possibilities for implementation of a water quality and coral reef monitoring system for the coastal waters of Bonaire. His bachelor thesis focussed on waterquantity management in combination with agricultural landuse in the Western part of the Netherlands.
After graduation he worked one year for environmental consultancy agency BCC on the implementation of an automated waterquantity management system and as a water control system supervisor for Hoogheemraadschap de Stichtse Rijnlanden.
In 2003 he started with a MSc. course in Physical Geography of coastal systems at the Utrecht University where he graduated with distinction in 2005. During this study he did an internship at RWS-RIKZ (Dutch institute for coastal management) in which he focussed on possibilities for sand suppletion to combat the morphology degradation of sandflats in the Eastern Scheldt, caused by construction of the storm surge barrier. He wrote his master thesis for NIOO-CEME; the thesis and research focussed on the influence of Spartina tussocks on hydrodynamics in the pioneer zone of an estuarine mudflat.
Projects
Towards sustainable coastal defense by salt marsh management: innovative extension and application of a state-of-the-art hydrodynamic model
The research group of this project consists of scientist from both the Technical University Delft and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, Centre for Estuarine and Marine Ecology. The project is funded by the Technical Sciences Foundation (STW). The end-users of the outcomes of this project are: WL|Delft Hydraulics, Rijkswaterstaat, Dutch Institute for coastal management (RIKZ), Het Zeeuwse Landschap and It Fryske Gea.
My PhD study is incoporated in this project. I am focussing on quantification of critical thresholds in salt-marsh development through field and flume experiments.
