Curriculum Vitae

I am born in 1956 in Belgium. I graduated from the University of Gent (Belgium) in 1982 (Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology) with a thesis on energy flow through meiobenthic (copepod, ostracod) populations. I remained at Gent University as a post-doc until 1987, when I joined the staff of the Delta Institute (later CEME) as ‘mathematical ecologist’. For five years, I provided services for statistical analyses, and developed the field of predictive ecosystem modelling in the institute. In 1992, with the reorganisation of NIOO-KNAW, I became a staff member of the department of Ecosystem Studies, where I studied the dynamics of benthic organisms and the exchange of food, nutrients and particles between sediment and water column. I was involved with several international research projects. Especially during the ECOFLAT project, I became interested in physical-biological interactions, and in upscaling process knowledge to explain spatial distributions of benthic organisms. Within the department of 'Spatial Ecology', erected in 2002, I further explore these problems from a theoretical and practical point of view. Emphasis is placed on the development of the estuarine landscape, based on a sound understanding of physical-biological interactions. Ecosystem engineering, processes by which fauna reshapes its physical environment, plays a prominent role in this research. I also keep interest in benthic-pelagic exchange processes and in the role of benthos in the biogeochemistry of ecosystems.
In 2008 I joined the Wadden Academy for one day per week. The WA is a KNAW institution that aims at providing a sound scientific basis for the study and the management of the Wadden Sea ecosystem. It is a multidisciplinary team of natural and social scientists. It provides me an opportunity to further develop my interest in societal processes and relations between science and environmental management.

Expertise
Estuarine ecology
I am teaching a course on Estuarine Ecology at the Radboud University (Nijmegen). This covers aspects ranging from the physics of estuaries, biogeochemical cycles, to physical characteristics of the estuary as a habitat

Ecological modelling
I have been using mathematical modelling and (multivariate) statistical analysis as major tools in my research. Modelling expertise is mostly in benthic processes, and recently also in analysis of spatially-explicit models. See also our handbook on ecological modelling: Soetaert, K. and P.M.J. Herman. A practical guide to ecological modeling. Using R as a simulation platform. Springer, 2009. Read it and you 'll enjoy modelling!

Benthic ecology
I graduated on a subject of energy flow in meiobenthos. My recent interest is in functional biodiversity of macrobenthos, especially in the interaction of benthic populations with biogeochemical and physical processes in estuaries
