Projects

Because of safety and agricultural requirements, water levels are maintained at a strict and stable level in the Netherlands. To maintain such water level in nature areas, water from outside the area, often with a lower quality (high sulfate and nutrient concentrations) needs to be supplied during dry period in summer. This has consequences for the plant growing on the banks of waterbodies within the nature areas. Currently, a more natural, fluctuating water level is re-installed in a number of fen areas. In cooperation with Waternet, Deltaris and B-Ware, we investigate the effects of this restoration measure on the quality of peat areas. Our focus lies in the effects of water level fluctuations on aquatic and riparian plant species. Besides we investigate whether a high herbivore pressure forms a potential threat to the development of helophytes and aquatic plants.
