Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Daphne van der Wal (1969) is a physical geographer, specialized in coastal geomorphology/ecology and in GIS/remote sensing.
In 1999, I obtained a PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam on aeolian transport of nourishment sand. Between 1999 and 2002, I worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Royal Holloway, University of London, linking changes in estuarine and saltmarsh morphology to environmental and anthropogenic drivers. Since 2002, I have been a research scientist at NIOO, where I introduced GIS and remote sensing, and expanded this line of research.
The central theme of my work is to quantify, understand and predict interactions between biota and their environment shaping the estuarine and coastal landscape. Methods include spatial modelling in GIS, forward and inverse modelling with remote sensing data (radar, optical and TIR satellite data and hyperspectral and lidar airborne data) for retrieving key variables (elevation, sediment texture, bed roughness, algal biomass and primary production, macrobenthic diversity, saltmarsh vegetation), combined with hydrodynamic models and field data.
Current research themes seek to unravel (1) the mechanisms of saltmarsh development, (2) the dynamics of intertidal sediments, (3) the structuring and functioning of intertidal benthic communities, and (4) benthic-pelagic interactions in estuaries and lagoons.
I have been referee for research grant applications and reviewer for over 20 scientific journals. I am also Associate Editor of Wetlands.
