Projects

Filter feeders Under Stress in changing lake ecosystems and its impact on higher Trophic levels in lakes Marker and IJsselmeer, The Netherlands (FUST) is part of the ANT (Autonome Neerwaartse Trend) project, which aims to understand the recent decline in bird numbers in IJssel- and Markermeer. The reasons for the decline seem to lie in the deterioration of food supply, mainly smelt and zebra mussels, which itself feed on plankton. Combination of re-oligotrophication, high concentrations of suspended solids (Markermeer) and cyanobacteria (IJsselmeer) are hypothesized to cause these ongoing decline in waterfowl and tested in laboratory and field work.
