The Environment Directorate-General of the European Commission, in cooperation with the Joint Research Centre and the Directorate-General for Climate Action, hosts a high-level conference on the interrelations between soil, climate change and biodiversity that will take place in Brussels.

During this conference the report on the importance of biodiversity in soil, that has been written by a. o. Prof. Dr. Wim van der Putten (Terrestrial Ecology, NIOO-KNAW),  will be officially presented.

In het gezegde Kiss the soil you walk on zit veel biologische waarheid. Het deel van het ecosysteem onder onze voeten is van vitaal belang voor het leven bovengronds. Dit geldt zowel voor de natuur als voor productie-ecosystemen: een duurzame samenleving wortelt in de biodiversiteit van het bodemleven. Alles wat wij eten, drinken, inademen, aan kleding dragen en als grondstoffen gebruiken, passeert regelmatig de bodem en haar bewoners. Zonder bodem en bodemorganismen geen voedsel.
