Earth is a living planet and understanding the biosphere is a huge intellectual challenge crucial for the future of mankind. Our planet is dramatically changing, yet its ecological complexity is little understood.

Thus far, the increase in scientific understanding has not kept pace with the challenges to a society faced with the consequences of human population and economic growth: accelerating destruction of the biosphere, loss of species and the resources they represent and global climate change. Sustainable development as the basic concept for an inhabitable planet requires basic knowledge on the structure and functioning of the major ecosystems on Earth.
