Personality and extra-pair paternity

Extra-pair paternity (EPP) is a common phenomenon in many socially monogamous bird species. The male that is feeding the chicks is not always the biological father. Females also mate with other males.

  • We have blood samples of several populations.
  • With molecular methods we can distinguish between social and biological fathers.

Possible research questions:

  • Are EPP rates higher in UK or in NL?
  • Is EPP related to personality?
  • Do high quality males get more EPP?
  • Do females choose their EP-mates?

Field work is not needed but can be discussed.

Possible any time of the year.
